Well I'm sure a few of you are rolling your eyes at the mere thought of these movies.
I've recently sat down and watched all of them (some for the third or fourth time) and I felt I had to rant on about them a bit.
So here goes.
(Contains spoilers if you haven't seen all movies)
No.1
The original, but is it the best?
Paul Walker as an undercover cop...
Prepare to suspend disbelief from the word go.
But hey, it has a pretty good cast, fast talking guys, sexy ladies and souped up cars.
Although I've never been a fan of the import cars, it has some good driving action in it, no denying that, and there's a little bit of muscle car action at the end.
It actually has a surprisingly small amount of driving in it and focuses a lot more on the characters.
Brian (Paul Walker) finds himself torn between the police duty and the connection he feels with the street racers, and of course his feelings for Mia (Jordana Brewster).
Ultimately he blows his cover to save the life of one of the gang members, and in the end lets Dom (Vin Diesel) go as the cops approach.
The inevitable sequel.
Picks up after the first one.
Brian is no longer a cop after what happened in the first one, gets nabbed streetracing and taken in by the police to go undercover once again.
Throw in a token fast talking black guy (Tyrese), a couple of comicbook style thugs and a kingpin (Cole Hauser), a sexy undercover customs officer (Eve Mendes) and we have ourselves another movie.
This one probably has the most driving out of all the movies, and lots more different cars.
Again it clearly takes place in its own universe and the disbelief has to be suspended even higher.
But it's all good.
It's eye candy and nothing more.
Tokyo Drift.....
So in the scheme of things this takes place AFTER Fast and Furious 6, which isn't even out yet.
The first time I watched it I thought it was pretty rubbish, as it had none of the original characters in it.
Dom makes an appearance at the end, but that's it.
Given a second viewing it's not too bad.
A lot of shiny cars, token black guy and all that, but still a decent movie for this series and genre.
They also put a Nissan motor in a Mustang....
Right, here we go.
The old cast back together.
Brian is somehow a cop again..... something that's not really explained.
Dom and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) are still on the run, travelling the world stealing petrol and carrying on.
When Letty gets killed Dom comes back to the US and crosses paths with Brian.
Together they start working for the kingpin who got Letty killed.
Lots of cool cars in this one and some good driving and chase scenes.
Dom eventually gets caught and sentenced to 25 to life.
Given the pretty decent effort with the last one, being the fourth in a series (sort of) I was looking forward to this fifth instalment.
Knowing that it still had most of the original cast and that it would pick up where the last one ended, with Brian, Mia and those Cheech and Chong type characters busting Dom out of the prison transport, it should be a good movie.
So it started just as predicted, but quickly went a bit odd if you ask me.
So they're all hiding out in Brasil, decide to do one big job and disappear forever.
Throw in Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as a badass bounty hunter and a local gang, all out to get our friends, and things get very messy.
Basically they're the America's most wanted and hide out in what looks like an old VW Beetle factory, get all their friends to come over, and plan a heist Ocean's 11/Italian Job style.
They steal police cars which they dragrace through the main street at night, drag a masive safe through the streets behind 2 cars, pretty much destroy the whole city, and in the end get away with all the loot.
They also leave a cliffhanger suggesting that Letty is alive.
(No surprises there really)
FF6 better wrap things up.
