I think we had this thread before, and like polyester, it never goes out of style.
We all know the Oscars were bought and paid for a long time ago. It should be about who/what is the best for that specific category. It doesn't always work that way. This is dedicated to films/actors/crew members that were snubbed by the Academy by not winning or not even getting nominated.
Some snubs that come to mind for me are:
Zodiac: No nominations at all, especially for Picture, Screenplay, Director and Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo),
Sin City: No Nominations at all, especially for Supporting Actor (Mickey Rourke) Visual Effects, Makeup and Director.
Saving Private Ryan or The Thin Red Line: Neither won best picture.
The Social Network: Though The King's Speech was a good film, The Social Network was in a class of its own.
Goodfellas: Hands down, one of the best films made. Only won one award. (I may be biased on this one, as I don't like Kevin Costner and don't like Dances With Wolves,)

I'm shocked that under the "movies that weren't nominated" category, you didn't like "Heat" from 1995.
But, for now, you want to keep it limited to five so we don't choke this thing? Lol.
Forrest Gump beating out Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption and, to a lesser extent, Quiz Show for Best Picture. 1994.
Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspects) beating out Ed Harris (Apollo 13) for Best Supporting Actor. 1995.
Sean Penn (Milk) beating out Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) for Best Actor. 2008.
While we're at it, The Wrestler not getting nomination for Best Picture. 2008.
I mentioned it before, but not in an officialy context. Heat getting zero nominations. 1995.

I'm not putting any limits, I just listed a few as I'm sure some of mine might have been on other people's lists.
Heat certainly was a big snub and Rourke didn't win only cause the Academy doesn't like him. That shouldn't negate him from winning as his performance was great. No disrespect to Sean Penn, he was good, but that was Rourke's award. Even Penn acknowledged him in his acceptance speech.

Yeah. They hated Sean Penn for the longest time then gave it to him for Mystic River. It's time to spread the love and stop giving it to the same three or four people every year. Lol.

They gave it to him cause he was less hated than Rourke at the time lol. It's unfortunate that this whole thing has turned political. It should be based on the best of the category and that's it. Unfortunately, it's never that way.

I know. I think it's one of those things where it's lost all credibility to the point of them needing to change the category from "Best..." to "Favorite...".

If they used "Favorite Actor" it would be more accurate. I would just like to see the ones that were the best each time win. Just once.

Senna got snubbed for best documentary which was bordering on criminal I also thought Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy got a rough deal this year!

I haven't seen it yet, but the reviews for TTSS were highly positive. It was just The Artist's year according to the Academy.

Oscars I don't get: Julia Roberts for EB Gwyneth Paltrow - Shakespeare in love Helen Mirren - The Queen (I think she is appalling and loathe her!)
Unsure about Helen Hunt in As Good As It Gets.

Julia Roberts was a gimmie cause she is/was Hollywood's favorite actress for some reason.
Still haven't seen all of Shakespeare in Love... all I know is that Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line were better films than Shakespeare in Love.
Helen Mirren won, just like Forest Whittaker that year, for an Oscar bait acting performance. (Just like Meryl Streep this year for The Iron Lady) Those movies are sub-standard and have one showy performance that the Academy bites on. It's pathetic.
Just my 2 cents.

Don't forget about PSH in "Capote"... It seems like they have at least one every single year.

Yeah, same thing with Hoffman for "Capote". It's like the movie is terrible, but they hire someone to elevate this crap so they can slap a sticker on the dvd that says "Academy Award Winner".
