I only read two kinds of things:
Screenplays: because I have to. Comic books: because I have to.
I'm ignit, I suppose.

Research. I write, like you, but my writing involves stealing other people's ideas. =)

An irony is I'm perfectly in the right for hating that book before I even read it. Reason? The title is a pun. A pun!
That said, I've heard varying opinions. Nearly everyone agrees that the actual writing (prose) was extremely weak then some people bought into the story while some didn't. Tis interesting, like reading the reviews for a David Lynch movie.
Good research, Groovy. Please... "research" away. =)

I just finished Outer Dark (Cormac McCarthy), which was intense and pretty brutal (but not as brutal as Child Of God, which, I think, cannot be surpassed in horror). Before that, I re-read World War Z and Z for Zachariah, which had been sitting on my shelf for at least a year. It was good, but considering what I was hoping for, sort of disappointing. I mean, I get that it's suppossed to be a young adult's book, but still... a nice little revenge plot or badass-ness at the end would have been a lot more satisfying, instead of the whole "oohh, i need to forgive the bad guy, because i'm sooo religious and that's my core value'. Pff. Would have been a lot more impressed if the girl (don't remember her name) would have poisoned his food or bashed his head in. Then again, my hatred for "Zachariah" (don't remember his real name, either) probably means that his character was sort of well written. I'm about to start Animals by Simon Beckett. I don't usually read crime, but I got it for my birthday and it looks like an ok, yet probably sort of cheap and cheesy read. I'll get back to you on that.

Good research, Groovy. Please... "research" away. =) Okay, I'm back. I was... doing some... research. lol Anyway, the book. Blonde, did you actually read it? Yeah, the pun title was lame. And the tie on the front. Come ON. I did not want to read it, especially since everyone else was. I also don't have much time to read, what with 37 kids running amok, but when I do, I like some horror novels (all of you need to read Seven by our own forum member Anvil - it is very, very good.) and some mystery - Kinky Friedman is my favorite mystery writer. I also like funny books, and sometimes I read fluff like the Shopaholic series. I normally don't read "romance" type novels. But someone bought it for me so I read it. I will agree with Blonde - it was poorly written. Almost like the author figured that anyone reading it was not a serious reader or was a teenager/young adult and wouldn't care how it was written, I dunno. At first I thought the book sucked donkey dicks. I was like, this dude Christian Grey is a total douche and I thought the protagonist Anastasia was kinda flaky. But about halfway through, I started to realize that I couldn't put it down. I was fascinated by their push me-pull you thing, and by his dark, brooding personality. I liked the "inner goddess" thing that the author gave Ana. The book was definitely, um, racy -- that's putting it mildly. Anyone who knows me knows that I am far from prudish, but I was a' blushin' at some of the stuff that they did. (Thought it was weird that the author was as descriptive as she was but didn't use slang words for Ana and Christian's naughty bits.) But some of the sex stuff seemed contrived/forced/gratuitous at times. I still don't know if I liked it or not.

Groovy, it's unnatural to "research" more than two or three times a day.
I can't afford to buy books... or anything, really. And, the book was "Six" (He liked the movie Se7en). Lol.
Well, you're not agreeing with me. You're agreeing with people who I heard about. =)
I've heard that some women like the fact that Ana never completely submits but you always have the people who are horrified by the very thought of it.
I don't know. I have no opinion and I'm not much of a book reader anyway.

I caved and read Fifty Shades of Grey just to see what the fuss was about and I hated it as it was so badly written - some of the sentences didn't even make sense
I didn't like Ana constantly referencing her inner goddess and her subconscious every five seconds. It made her seem like a complete simpleton. I know she is young in the books but no functioning adult is that bloody young and immature.
The sexual content and BDSM didn't bother me but there was clearly no research into the lifestyle that couldn't be gleaned from Wiki (I looked). It was a bored housewives fantasy and nothing more than that with no attempt at exploring the psychological aspects of the lifestyle. There were hints at Grey's upbringing and past life but it was soap opera bullshit.
Grey spent the first few chapters manipulating Ana to be his submissive and then constantly gave her alcohol to get her to say yes. I couldn't get past the notion that he groomed her - Ana never said no but she never said yes with a clear head - so I read the book with a complete hatred of Christian Grey.
I was glad when Ana walked away from Grey at the end of the first book, not because the idea of submitting disgusts me, but because Christian Grey is a horrible character. There is nothing about him that warrants any sympathy or understanding but we are supposed to love him (as readers) because he is a big muscular Adonis of a man and he is rich.
Won't be reading the next two books that's for damn sure!

Ranty rambling post I know but the book pisses me off because it sucks and is so successful.
The fact that it started out as Twilight fiction and has escalated into the faster selling book ever is just horrifying.

Don't you find it funny how the main ingredient of soaps and things like that is water?
