Been playing it a bit and... well.... I dunno. I brought this up earlier about New games vs old and I feel that this, like so many new games, lacks that feeling of being on a mission. Sure you can roam around and do whatever you want, and as long as you resist the urge to shoot strangers and loot their corpse, you pretty much stay out of trouble. I've shot just about every wild animal there is, collected meat, skin, claws and feathers, bought ammo, had a drink, jumped from my horse to the train, shot the engine driver and all the passengers. I had a massive shootout in Armadillo and killed everyone in town. Men women dogs horses EVERYONE. Including two lots of hardcore special agents. I hid behind the counter in the doctors office and shot everyone as they came through the door. I think my bounty was up over $1500 when they finally got me. Still, while all that is fun, I miss the old style of gaming where you HAVE to do something before you can get to the next level or room or part of the map. *sigh* At first I thought this was going to be a bit different from Far Cry 2, which I also got bored with as it didn't quite change. Once you realise the limitations of the environment it feels like you're just roaming around waiting for the odd mission to pop up. Ride from A to B, have a little shootout and return to A. The horse is also frustrating at the best of times. It's a good timewaster but it's not a very engaging game.

I recently aquired the lasso. That makes things more interesting.
Also got drunk in the saloon. (Why didn't I think of that earlier?)
When you go after a guy off the bounty poster and he escapes, will you be able to chase him later again?

I do agree with you; it isn't the most engaging, and it doesn't have the depth of GTA5, the choice of fallout or the magnificence of oblivion. For me, it is all about the online. It is unrivaled for the multiplayer, and while I quickly had enough of the single player, the competitions are another story and continually draw me in.

I've also noticed there's no children in the villages/towns. I guess they couldn't do that as it wouldn't be PC to kill kids in a video game? The dead eye is a cool feature. As I was leaving town I came across those 4 bandits and shot all 4 of them with one headshot each over my shoulder. My honour keeps going up and down. It was really high there for a bit then I went on a rampage and killed everyone. My bounty was close to $1000 but a letter of pardon soon fixed that. Where do those letters come from anyway? I always seem to have one but don't recall being given one. Part from the one that graverobber gave me.

Well, I'm a bit further in to the game now, about 45% I think, and it's definitely picking up. Better weapons, the lasso and the Dead Eye being changed to manual is making things more interesting.
I'm also spending a bit more time jsut cruising around looking at scenery, following the villagers around listening to their conversations and seeing what they do.
It's amazing the amount of detail that goes in to these games.
The music is nothing short of awesome, and really adds to the feel of the game.

Hey I'm 38 in a few weeks. Been playing games since the days of Space Invaders, Pacman and Donkey Kong. I'm still waiting for the day full virtual reality suits and goggles become as common as PS3 and XBOX consoles. It will happen one day.

Well, I got seriously sucked in to this game, didn't I.... ;D
I finished all the main story missions, got to the end and have now started over again, trying to be as nasty as possible. It's hard to keep the honour level low as it rises whenever you do a mission....
I'm at "Desperado" level at the moment - dunno if it gets any lower than that? People scream and run whenever they see me.
I attract "The dark horse" when I whistle.
I pretty much shoot anyone I come across, have had countless shootouts in Armadillo and on McFarlane's ranch, cracked safes etc. Seems you can get away with robbing the bank in Armadillo if you hogtie the banker, drag him in to the vault and leave him there.
The guy who challenges you to shoot 4 birds doesn't stand a chance. I blow his head off and take his money. Much quicker.
I'm so infamous that people don't report any crimes lower than murder, and the shops in Thieves Landing are selling their products at lower prices.
Herbert Moon has bitten the dust a number of times too by the way. I chase after the guy who robbed him, then ride back and bust a cap in his ass (or head).
;D

Ugh I got so sick of Jack. I only lasted a few hours playing as him before I got the shits with his voice, the way he talked to his horse and all the little things he kept saying.
I blew him up with some dynamite and started over as John. ;D

I like the way you complained about the game at the beginning of the thread and at the end admitted you got sucked in.
Brilliant game if you ask me. As well as having solid gameplay which is TI be expected from a Rockstar sandbox gane, what makes it stand out isn't the dynamic and varied gameplay or even the plot and voice acting which is very good and packs an emotional punch, it's the extremely immersive world that feels very real. When you're out in the wilderness, you really feel surrounded by nature and nothing else, or when you cross the border to Mexico it genuinely feels like you've done some epic Quixotic journey. I think that's what makes it a standout game.

Absolutely.
I think I was a bit too quick to judge as I came in to this game after having played (and not completed) Far Cry 2 which is very similar in that it has a great changing environment, weather changes and all round stunning graphics, but it's SOOOO repetitive. Also you can't take 2 steps without getting shot at from 2 miles away.
RDD is amazing and all the little cutscenes are very well made. The movement of the characters and all the little facial expressions and reactions when someone is talking are just spot on.

Glad you like it, Dirty. Where there any missions/stories that stuck out for you?

YES! I just played The Great Mexican Train Robbery again last night. Didn't even bother trying to sneak up on the guards, but just shot one and then ran in to the big building across from the station and plucked them one by one with the sniper rifle from the balcony, through the windows and from the roof. Also the arc with Seth the graverobber and the drunken Irishman were hilarious. Dunno if you saw on the previous page that I'm playing it a second time around and am going rogue this time. There's been some serious bloodbaths in Armadillo and Chuparosa. Also went spastic in that monastery (Las Hermanas?) last night and busted a number of caps in several asses. Including the nuns

Well, that's...lovely, I guess. ;D It might be because I don't oven replay games a second time or because the stories I play the first time just get really stuck with me, but I never feel comfortable playing a baddie. Isn't that dumb?
