Everyone knows their name, but what are some thoughts about them and their music?
I've never been a huge fan of PF, but some of their music, especially the instrumentals are mesmerizing. Obviously if you are on some drugs, they might be even better, but I do enjoy the atmosphere they create with their music.

When I was an undergraduate I did a unit called politics of the permissive society (meaning 60s Britain). We had a closed exam and about 10 questions. I used pink floyd lyrics as a quote to open every question, and while I loved them before that, after getting my grades I loved them even more.
I think they are exceptional - the lyrics on some of the songs are something else. Time is deservedly one of the most well known, but more than the amazing ambiance of the music, the great lyrics and the originality of the band, comes their interpretation of a time of unbelievable social and political change seen in the 60s. Their music tells a story on every possible level and I think they are amazing.

This is true. The mix of lyrics with greater meaning than most bands nowadays mixed with an unusual, but welcoming sounds is a great mix. I'm not a huge musical geek, so unfortunately I do not have a vast array of knowledge about Pink Floyd, but when I do hear them I enjoy them. Besides the obvious good music, getting good grades from them may have stepped them up an added notch for you.

They say they want to save the world, but all they do is sit around and smoke pot.

They are thinking about what they will be doing to save the world.... as they smoke pot. And make things with hemp.

"The Floyd" have always been a part of my life as a music listener. While I love stuff like "The Wall", "Dark Side Of The Moon" and "Momentary Lapse Of Reason" I still rate "The Division Bell" as their best album. It's solid all the way through and you get a feeling that this was what David Gilmour wanted to do all along. It's also vry clear that he is saddened that he and Waters left on bad terms, when you listen to the lyrics. Lines like " So I open the door for my enemy, and ask can we wipe the slate clean.... And they tell me to please go f##k myself, you know you just can't win"....It's funny watching interviews with the band. They were such an odd group of people who never really seemed to get along but made great music together. David Gilmour, while one of my favourite guitarrists ever, seems like such a grumpy, self centered old man these days. He always comes across as very smug and full of himself. On a side note, when I lived in London I worked on a landscaping job by the river in the outer suburbs. Right next door to Gilmours river house and recording studio. Had I known at the time that it was his place I probably wouldn't have taken a leak against the fence. Ah well This really applies to all types of music.....

I don't know. Pink Floyd is an acquired taste that I never acquired. I don't need any hidden meanings in my music. That's probably why I like The Doors and Creedence... Lol.

Isn't ALL music an aquired taste? As for the hidden meanings.... you can still listen to PF without worrying about what it all means. The Doors stuff was hardly "Yeah, Yeah, Baby, Baby" stuff either... ;D Do you like instrumental music?
